RILED UP AND ROLLLIN’…MUSINGS AND MISCELLANEA

January 31, 2008

Ralph Nader Flirts with Presidential Bid. Give it up, Ralph…after what you did last time around [including accepting PAC money from REPUBLICANS] who do you think is going to vote for you? When I ponder who it is we need as our next President I try to imagine someone in the office who actually has the ability to LEAD. Nader’s “following” is so minuscule as to be next to non existent. Yes, he had a progressive role at one time, but, despite his rhetoric, Ralphie’s time has PASSED!

Mukasey Won’t Comment on Waterboarding

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Michael Mukasey said Tuesday he will refuse to publicly say whether the interrogation tactic known as waterboarding is illegal, digging in against critics who want the Bush administration to define it as torture.

Did we say TOLD YOU SO?? Despite harsh questioning by Senators Leahy, Kennedy and Specter, the nations top Law Enforcement official refused [again] to condemn the torture technique of waterboarding as, of all things, torture.

“Given that waterboarding is not part of the current program and may never be added to the current program, I do not think it would be appropriate for me to pass definitive judgment on the technique’s legality,” he said.

The reasoning behind this deliberate dance of deceit? If the AG formally recognizes waterboarding as torture it puts his bosses, Mssr Bush and Cheney, in deep doo doo, mainly because they and their minions are ultimately responsible and could therefor conceivably be charged with War Crimes under the Geneva Conventions. Gasp! Shades of Alberto Gonzalez!

Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. Senate Bill 1959

December 6, 2007

As I asserted in an earlier post, a prime pastime in Washington DC these days seems to be to find ways to circumscribe, emasculate and otherwise render our Constitution’s Bill of Rights inoperative. Now comes Senate bill 1959, introduced by US Senator Susan Collins of Maine.[ http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s110-1959 ].

If you believe, as I do, that the two Patriot Acts and the Military Commission Act of 2006 were serious attacks on our basic Constitutional rights, then SB 1959 ought to scare the living bejeezus out of you. This bill is the Senate version of a bill, sponsored by California Democratic Representative Jane Harman, that was passed in the House by an overwhelming 405 to 6 vote on October 24th and is now awaiting approval by the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

Harman’s bill contends that the United States will soon have to deal with home grown terrorists and that something must be done to anticipate and neutralize the problem. The act deals with the issue through the creation of a congressional commission that will be empowered to hold hearings, conduct investigations, and designate various groups as “homegrown terrorists.”” [Huffington Post] [btw: Congressman Dennis Kucinich voted AGAINST the Bill]

The Huffington Post article appeared on 11/26, the link to which is:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/philip-giraldi/the-violent-radicalizatio_b_74091.html

Following is a sample letter to your Senator that can be used as is, or, as a template for your own.

Dear Senator

It has come to my attention, that The U.S. House of Representatives has recently passed HR 1955 titled the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. This is now up for review in the Senate Judiciary committee, listed as S.1959. (more…)

Dennis Kucinich, Dragon Slayer, For President, Oh, and Impeach Dick Cheney too…

November 9, 2007

Dennis Kucinich has thrown down the gauntlet. And it is very very very serious. Do not be fooled, this is no longer a fire that can be contained. This is the real deal. The real shit. This is where the High Crimes and Misdemeanors get enumerated. This is history being writ large before your very eyes. Damned if Kucinich did not outplay Both the Democrats AND the Republicans, leading them by the nose into a trap of their own construction. Damn, I am impressed.

Now to make it really happen, to force the House Judiciary Committee to bring it before the whole house and have a trial...this is very, very serious shit.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

In my humble opinion the introduction of an Impeachment Bill into the US House of Representatives has a strong probability of making the Watergate hearings of the 70’s look like kindergarten exercises. There is much anecdotal and definitive evidence that OUR country has been literally hi-jacked and turned into a fiefdom, where wars are waged because they tried to kill your daddy [and failed], for control of oil resources that do not belong to us, for some ignorant Neo-con bureaucrats perverted view of the world that is used to justify a war where 600,000-700,000 Iraqi’s, nearly 6,000 Americans and who knows how many others are dead in the desert…

And the chief cheerleader? Darth Vader himself, and I do not use the term lightly. In the real world it is extremely unlikely that this Darth Vader will ever confess to having erred by going over to the Dark Side. He will never apologize to Luke [the American and Middle Eastern peoples]. He is a most malignant cancer, festering in and rotting the body politic. That Cancer, and those who have been further infected by it, need to be, must be, removed from OUR government.

What congressman Kucinich has done is put into play one of the People’s most powerful weapons, the Constitutional right to Impeachment and Removal from office, with the potential, the very serious potential, of major criminal charges being levied as a consequence of a Trial and Impeachment.

The House, the Senate, the government, has been called to order. We the people, must now do our part. Write, call and email your representatives. At every level, local, county, state and federal.

Help make the movement to Impeach Vice President Cheney into a Really Strong Movement in history… not just another moment lost in history. Do your part. Now.

21of the Bravest people in Congress. The Co Sponsors of Rep Kucinich’s bill…

H. Res. 333, Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President, has 21 cosponsors. They are: Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Robert Brady (D-PA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Rep. Henry Johnson (D-GA), Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), Rep. James Moran (D-VA), Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep. Diane Watson (D-CA), Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Rep. Albert Wynn (D-MD).

I salute them, every one.

BTW There are literally hundreds of article in mainstream and on line journals about the Impeachment bill. These are just a couple of samples from some MSM outlets. What I find of particular interest is that the general tone of many these article is no longer one of poking fun at the ufo guy [I don’t this we are alone either].

New Diplomatic Offensive for Iraq (H.R. 3797)

November 1, 2007

From the Friends Committee on National Legislation:

Congressman Hobson [R-7 OH] was one of 35 Republicans to cosponsor the Iraq Study Group Implementation Act. Now we hope you will persuade him to cosponsor another piece of legislation that would translate the inclusive diplomacy recommended by the study group into U.S. policy.
This new legislation, the New Diplomatic Offensive for Iraq (H.R. 3797), has 22 cosponsors right now. The House leadership has indicated it will bring this legislation to a vote if we can increase the number of cosponsors to between 40 and 50 and demonstrate the legislation has strong bipartisan support. This legislation would be a step toward establishing a new U.S. policy in Iraq and the region based on negotiations with all of Iraq’s neighbors to ease tensions in the region, help stabilize Iraq, and facilitate U.S. withdrawal. This legislation could also put an important speed bump in the way of plans for war with Iran. We at FCNL believe that congressional support for direct talks with Iran, Syria, and Iraq’s other neighbors is crucial to extricating the U.S. from Iraq and preventing a wider war.

The House leadership refused to bring the previous ISG bill to a vote. But H.R. 3797 offers a new chance to push the U.S. down the road to the diplomacy needed to end the war. (more…)
