Study: Bush Led US To War on ‘False Pretenses’ [all the lies, quantified and catalogued…]

by Douglass K. Daniel

A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.0123 10 1 2 3

The study concluded that the statements “were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.”

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration’s position that the world community viewed Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat.

“The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world,” Stanzel said. (more…)

Whose Side Is She On?? Pelosi greeted with “Impeach” Bush and Cheney buttons

January 18th, 2008, filed by Thomas Ferraro

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she’s drawing heat from fellow Democratic lawmakers as well as people across the nation for refusing to move to impeach President George W. Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney.

“I go through airports, and people have buttons as if they knew I was coming,” Pelosi said with a smile, mimicking a protester pointing to an “Impeach” button on their chest.rtx4btx.jpg

But the California Democrat said she is sticking to her position that trying to remove Bush or Cheney would be divisive, and she added, most likely unsuccessful. If the House voted to impeach Bush and Cheney, a two-thirds vote would be needed in the closely divided Senate to oust them.

Many Democrats and civil liberties groups have accused the Bush administration of misleading the United States into the Iraq war and violating the rights of U.S. citizens with its warrantless surveillance program. The White House denies the charges.

In helping Democrats win back control of Congress in 2006 from rtr1vyu5.jpgRepublicans, Pelosi said she would not push for impeachment despite a number of calls to do so.

Speaking with reporters, she recalled that she wanted to focus on unifying the nation, passing the Democrats’ legislative agenda — not picking an impeachment fight with the White House.

“It was my belief that an impeachment of the Vice President or the President … would be very divisive in our country, and that is what I believed then,” Pelosi said. “It should have come to no surprise when I became Speaker I said it again, and I continue to hold that view.”

On Tuesday, January 15th, four free speech/fair election patriots visited the set of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (and guest, Bill Maher, who was coincidentally appearing), to voice their displeasure over NBC, MSNBC and parent company General Electric’s refusal to allow Congressman Dennis Kucinich to debate his fellow Democrats in MSNBC’s televised Presidential debate to be held that evening. The four First Amendment advocates, Carol Barbieri, Jennifer Epps, Eva James and Mark Lipman, “interrupted” the Tonight Show airing, exercised their Constitutional rights, and used the people’s airwaves to inform conglomerate G.E. of its failure to appropriately inform American voters of the views and policies of ALL candidates vying for the nomination of the Democratic Party.

Since their brazen challenge to G.E., NBC and MSNBC via their Tonight Show “presence,” there has been wide media speculation as to who the “visitors” were and why they had made so vocal – and perhaps disruptive an “appearance.” The following is their OPEN LETTER in their own words to Jay Leno, Bill Maher, MSNBC, conglomerate General Electric, and the American public to provide an in-depth and informative explanation. (Please view the youtube link of their Tonight Show “appearance”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDWsxgVOSk8)

I know these patriots personally and respect their love of nation and their fearlessness. I’ve been provided this letter and substantiating data to publish on their behalf. I’m delighted to do so: (more…)

SALEM, Ore. – A House Resolution to impeach U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney, Dennis Kucinich’s H.R. 799, is gathering more support. The national impeachment continues to grow and generate increasing interest since being referred to the House Judiciary Committee last month, a Kucinich spokesperson said.0102 07

As a member of that committee, Representative Robert Wexler and two other committee members, Luis Gutierrez and Tammy Baldwin, have joined together in demanding that the legal action against Cheney moves forward.

Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida is just one elected official who says the charges are too serious to ignore.

“There is credible evidence that the Vice President abused the power of his office, and not only brought us into an unnecessary war but violated the civil liberties and privacy of American citizens. It is the constitutional duty of Congress to hold impeachment hearings”

He went on to say that he believes Vice President Dick Cheney and the Bush Administration have demonstrated a consistent pattern of abusing the law and misleading Congress and the American people.

“We see the consequences of these actions abroad in Iraq and at home through the violations of our civil liberties,” Wexler said. (more…)

Waterboarding ‘greenlit at top levels of power’

by Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington for Guardian Unlimited (UK) – December 11, 2007

The White House today was directly accused ofauthorising the waterboarding of al-Qaida suspects, putting President George Bush at the centre of a deepening controversy about the treatment of detainees. The charge from John Kiriakou, a former CIA official involved in the capture of senior al-Qaida operatives, comes at a time when the Bush administration is trying to contain a row over the destruction of hundreds of hours of video footage of the interrogation of a high-level al-Qaida suspect, Abu Zubaydah. Arms Expert Scott Ritter Says the U.S. Plans to Attack Iran.

A well respected expert in his field, Scott Ritter herein lays out a scenario regarding iran that could have incredibly bad results. It is a bit on the long side, but worth reading for the insight into current Bushevik policies.

11/30/07 “Metro Times” — – – It seems that with each passing week there are more stories raising the specter of George Bush turning Iraq and Afghanistan into a bloody trifecta by attacking Iran.

In mainstream daily papers we see pieces like one by Gannett’s John Yaukey, who wrote in early November that “confrontation could be near” because “Iran continues to taunt the United States with its aggressive posturing in Iraq and Lebanon while pushing ahead with its nuclear research …”

We are also witnessing what appears to be a chilling rerun of the Iraq debacle. Confronted with evidence that calls into question the status of Iran’s nuclear program, the Bush administration is shifting its rhetoric.

“The Bush administration has charged that Iran is funding anti-American fighters in Iraq and sending in sophisticated explosives to bleed the U.S. mission, although some of the administration’s charges are disputed by Iraqis as well as the Iranians,” the Los Angeles Times reported in October. “Still, … diplomatic and military officials say they fear that the overreaching of a confident Iran, combined with growing U.S. frustrations, could set off a dangerous collision.”

Look beyond daily papers — from Seymour Hersh’s reporting in The New Yorker to articles in The Nation — and the picture emerges of an administration that is determined to attack Iran.

John H. Richardson’s “The Secret History of the Impending War With Iran That the White House Doesn’t Want You to Know” in the November issue of Esquire magazine is particularly eye-opening. Richardson, using two former high-ranking Middle East experts who worked for the White House as his primary sources, warns that the Bush administration is “headed straight for war with Iran” and that “it had been set on this course for years.”

“It was just like Iraq, when the White House was so eager for war it couldn’t wait for the UN inspectors to leave,” writes Richardson, who details the Bush administration’s success at scuttling diplomatic efforts — notably involving then-Secretary of State Colin Powell — to reach a peaceful accord with Iran. “The steps have been many and steady and all in the same direction. And now things are getting much worse. We are getting closer and closer to the tripline. …”

With all this in mind, we decided to talk with the man who literally wrote the book on Bush’s intentions. Nearly a year ago, Scott Ritter’s Target Iran was published, and he’s been sounding the claxon of impending war ever since.

A former Marine Corps intelligence officer, Ritter served as chief United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991 to 1998 when he left as a pointed critic of the Clinton administration’s commitment to weapons inspection and its Iraq policy. Before the United States’ 2003 invasion, Ritter loudly disputed the Bush administration’s claims regarding weapons of mass destruction under Saddam’s control and predicted that, instead of the quick and easy war being promised, Iraq would turn into a quagmire, though not necessarily of the type he envisioned. His analyses have been embraced by both the right and the left at various points. He portrays himself as the straight-shooting analyst unconcerned by who supports him or whom he offends. (more…)

Dennis Kucinich, Dragon Slayer, For President, Oh, and Impeach Dick Cheney too…

Dennis Kucinich has thrown down the gauntlet. And it is very very very serious. Do not be fooled, this is no longer a fire that can be contained. This is the real deal. The real shit. This is where the High Crimes and Misdemeanors get enumerated. This is history being writ large before your very eyes. Damned if Kucinich did not outplay Both the Democrats AND the Republicans, leading them by the nose into a trap of their own construction. Damn, I am impressed.

Now to make it really happen, to force the House Judiciary Committee to bring it before the whole house and have a trial...this is very, very serious shit.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

In my humble opinion the introduction of an Impeachment Bill into the US House of Representatives has a strong probability of making the Watergate hearings of the 70’s look like kindergarten exercises. There is much anecdotal and definitive evidence that OUR country has been literally hi-jacked and turned into a fiefdom, where wars are waged because they tried to kill your daddy [and failed], for control of oil resources that do not belong to us, for some ignorant Neo-con bureaucrats perverted view of the world that is used to justify a war where 600,000-700,000 Iraqi’s, nearly 6,000 Americans and who knows how many others are dead in the desert…

And the chief cheerleader? Darth Vader himself, and I do not use the term lightly. In the real world it is extremely unlikely that this Darth Vader will ever confess to having erred by going over to the Dark Side. He will never apologize to Luke [the American and Middle Eastern peoples]. He is a most malignant cancer, festering in and rotting the body politic. That Cancer, and those who have been further infected by it, need to be, must be, removed from OUR government.

What congressman Kucinich has done is put into play one of the People’s most powerful weapons, the Constitutional right to Impeachment and Removal from office, with the potential, the very serious potential, of major criminal charges being levied as a consequence of a Trial and Impeachment.

The House, the Senate, the government, has been called to order. We the people, must now do our part. Write, call and email your representatives. At every level, local, county, state and federal.

Help make the movement to Impeach Vice President Cheney into a Really Strong Movement in history… not just another moment lost in history. Do your part. Now.

BTW There are literally hundreds of article in mainstream and on line journals about the Impeachment bill. These are just a couple of samples from some MSM outlets. What I find of particular interest is that the general tone of many these article is no longer one of poking fun at the ufo guy [I don’t this we are alone either].

The Impeachment Of Dick Cheney/Bob Cesca:Huffington Post

11/05/2007 Reposted from The Huffington Post/by Bob Cesca

Public perception can beat the shit out of political nuance. The Bush Republicans know this and they have abused it for their own nefarious ends. The Democrats, on the other hand, have somehow overlooked this very basic rule of 21st Century American politics, which is a shame since they would more often than not use it for the betterment of the nation.

After all, one year ago yesterday, we elected the Democrats in overwhelming numbers to amplify our screaming voices to a decibel loud enough to penetrate the unchecked corridors of power in Washington — we hired this party to speak for us and to use this expressed authority to end the war and to hold this historically unpopular executive regime accountable.

To date and with the exception of some admirable investigations by a few standout lawmakers, the Democrats have done nothing to make good on their mandate from you and me.

It was yesterday, on the one year anniversary of the collapse of Karl Rove’s thousand-year Reich, when the Democrats subjected themselves to both public embarrassment and public disgrace, and each within a few hours of the other. (more…)
