DAYTON CHRYSLER/BEHR SUPERFUND SITE MAKES YOUTUBE

DAYTON RESIDENTS USE YOUTUBE TO HELP WITH A HUGE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM AT A SUPERFUND SITE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD.  A GROUP CALLED BVOCAL HAS MADE A SHORT VIDEO, “THIS IS OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!” TO TELL THEIR STORY WORLDWIDE AND TO ENCOURAGE STRONGER ACTION FROM THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY.

THEY WANT THEIR HOMES RETESTED FOR TRICHLOROETHYLENE, A DANGEROUS INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL.

Here is the link to the video on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8tXRg3-bEg

Three years ago, people who live in the McCook Field neighborhood of Dayton Ohio learned that the former Chrysler Airtemp plant at Leo and Webster Streets, now owned by Behr, had leaked trichloroethylene (TCE), into the ground and that toxic vapor from the chemical was coming up into their houses at unsafe levels.  Over 400 homes have been tested for vapors and elevated TCE levels were found in more than half. Contamination levels as much as 650 times the official “action level” have been found. One school has been closed due to contamination. The USEPA says this is one of the worst contamination sites in the country and has made it a Superfund site.

Mitigation systems, which are a patch but not a fix for the problem, have been installed in many homes but the TCE plume continues to move through the groundwater causing levels under the homes to constantly change.  For that reason, all of the homes need to be periodically retested in order to insure that they are safe, something the USEPA has not yet agreed to do.

BVOCAL spokesperson Jerry Bowling says, “We want to tell our story and to encourage the USEPA to retest all of our homes on an ongoing basis until the problem is resolved.”

The Ohio Department of Health has found that TCE exposure is linked to kidney cancer, liver cancer, non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and several other types of cancer including Hodgkin’s lymphoma and cervical cancer.  A cancer incidence study of the McCook Field area completed by the Ohio Department of Health in August 2008 found that for all cancer types, the neighborhood had a significantly higher than expected number of cancer cases and that for 4 types of cancer associated with TCE exposure; liver, non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and cervical cancer, there were more observed cases in the area than would have been expected.

TCE exposure can also cause other health effects such as headaches, lung irritation, dizziness, coordination and concentration difficulties, skin rashes, nerve and immune system damage and damage to fetal development. Many of these problems have been reported by residents of the neighborhood.

Chrysler discovered the TCE contamination on its property in 1989 or 1990.  Almost 20 years later, the site is still not being cleaned up despite the severity of the contamination and the number of people affected.

Now that Chrysler has filed bankruptcy, it appears that it may try to completely walk away from it’s responsibilities to this neighborhood.  The BVOCAL group is working to make sure that doesn’t happen and that the USEPA does everything it can to protect this community.

McCain Shows Us How to Kill an Army

John McCain, who from the early 1980s worked hard to establish himself as one of the Senate’s shining champions of Vietnam veterans’ issues, completed his betrayal of the Iraq-era troops today. Brandon Friedman of vetvoice.com has the details:

Yesterday VoteVets.org delivered a petition with 30,000 signatures to the office of Sen. John McCain. Through that petition, we asked him to support Sen. Jim Webb’s new GI Bill. And less than 24 hours later, we have an answer:

“Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, seemed to give a thumbs down to bipartisan legislation that would greatly expand educational benefits for members of the military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan under the GI Bill …”

The reason for McCain’s refusal to support the bill is about the most disturbing rationale one could imagine. … Officials in charge of Pentagon personnel worry that a more generous and expansive GI Bill would create an incentive for troops to get out of the military and go to college.

Friedman observes that McCain’s no-college-for-grunts position essentially says to the troops: “Thanks for your service and your three combat tours in five years. Now get back to work.” (more…)

Citizens Advisory Board/Dept of Energy/Piketon:S.O.N.G.

Dear Friends of SONG,

The Department of Energy has set an April 11 deadline for applications for the Citizens Advisory Board. We do not understand this deadline and have asked DOE to explain it, without response. But there it is. DOE has also not explained why there is no on-line application procedure, or why the agency has not contacted various important segments of the community like Indian Tribes with historic ties to the Piketon site.

Given the situation, we urge all of you to apply for membership. We fear an attempt to stack the CAB with representatives of development interests. Therefore, the more citizens without conflicts of interest apply, the less defense the agency will have for placing individuals on the board who do have a conflict of interest.

Ask family members to apply. Ask friends to apply. Even if you live far away and have questions about service, apply. However we decide to challenge the CAB process in the future, your application is important.

Applications can be downloaded from   www.LPPORTS.com. They must then be mailed to:

Will Iraq’s Great Awakening Lead to a Nightmare?

Washington Dispatch: U.S. casualties are down in Iraq. But a retired Army Colonel argues that the surge and American payoffs to Sunni tribal leaders may eventually backfire—producing more instability and possibly a regional war.

After shaking Kucinich’s hand outside Brewbakers coffee shop in Keene, Jane Morgan of Hancock said she’ll definitely support him in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary. “He says what he thinks is right and he doesn’t mind saying things that will turn people off.”

Kucinich kicks off a fourteen hour day of presidential campaigning in the Keene, New Hampshire area by greeting campaign volunteers Bill Hay of Keene (center) and Donnell Graves of Cambridge, Mass. Bagel Works cafe.

Kucinich and his wife, Elizabeth, enter a house party at the Keene, New Hampshire home of dentist Paul Krautmann, where the candidate told Democratic primary voters: “If people want a winner, I can win.”

Keene, N.H. — “Moose Crossing” warnings still outnumber political signs along the snow-dusted byways of New Hampshire, home of the nation’s first presidential primary and the place where underdog Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich has pinned his presidential hopes.

Although Kucinich trails his party’s front-runners in campaign money and polls, the Cleveland congressman says he hopes to pull off an upset in New Hampshire’s Jan. 8 primary through the kind of hard work and grass-roots networking he has employed in Northeast Ohio for decades.

With that in mind, he recently wrapped up a 10-day campaign trip to rustic New Hampshire, where he spent 16-hour days shaking hands and delivering speeches in whitewashed town halls, cozy living rooms, local eateries and country club ballrooms.

“New Hampshire seems to be ready for a real change,” Kucinich said between a book signing and town hall meeting last weekend in Keene, a picturesque college town that calls itself the “Currier and Ives” corner of New Hampshire. “Every town hall meeting has been a solid turnout. What it tells me is that this election is not over. People are listening carefully to what I have to say, and when they hear what I have to say, they seem to like it.” (more…)

After five years of being mostly in L.A. where Thanksgiving generally happens under the harshest of desert suns, I am back home in New York, which pleases me. I was considering sharing my mother’s marvelous and slightly eccentric recipe for turkey, bathed in garlic and a good olive oil and cooked in a brown paper bag, which is not to be opened until the bird is cooked. I have done it many times, to (first) the bafflement and worry, and then (inevitable) pleasure of friends, and it always produces a gorgeous and succulent bird. I’ll save it for next year.

At Passover, I am the one who causes the trouble, and asks unpleasant questions about the current iteration of the land of milk and honey. So you can tell where this is going, regarding the giving of thanks. If you are lucky enough to share the day with friends and family, there is usually a moment where you take in the gathered, the noise, the remains of the meal, kids, dogs, parents, all more or less equally sedated, and sort of smile. You smile at the good fortune of being with people you love, and have known for a very long time. At the safety of it. In my case, there is much to be grateful for. Health, faculties more or less intact, sense of humor more or less intact, and a small measure of financial security for now. So without turning Thanksgiving into some sort of secular Yom Kippur (one is enough, really), a little accounting is in order between the glazed yams and the turkey sandwich the next day. (more…)

SHADOWS ON HIGH: Tuesday’s Vote Tells The Nation A Lot About Ohio ‘08

Congratulations go out to Ohio Democrats and Progressives where big-city Mayors changed hands in Lorain and Canton (long held by the GOP) and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman and his well-run coordinated campaign cruised to a third term in a landslide.

There were few misfires down at blue headquarters on State Street, but there are trends that give a glimpse into November 2008.  Lest progressives start high-fiving, Ohio is not going to be a cakewalk in a Presidential race. Just a sobering reminder: the Quinnipiac Poll has the two Presidential front-runners in an Ohio dead heat with Rudy up two points over Hillary in their latest Ohio head-to-head poll. (more…)

Clean Energy Bill In Senate Need Support

October 24, 2007

Congress is now considering the most dramatic clean energy legislation in years. Done right, it can make a significant dent in reducing global warming pollution, save billions in

energy costs, and stimulate billions more in innovation and investment.

Please help make this happen. Send an email today urging your Senator to support including in the energy legislation:

1. A 15% Federal Renewable Electricity Standard (RES)
2. A 35 mile-per-gallon fuel economy standard (CAFE)

Passing this bill in the Senate is tough. We need at least 60 votes out of 100 to win and counter the strong industry lobby groups’ opposition to RES and CAFE.

Let’s work to pass strong clean energy legislation to put our country on the right course – reducing global warming pollution, improving our national energy security, and revitalizing our economy.

We need your help. Send an email today for clean energy legislation before its too late.
