House Passes Children’s Health Bill/Rep’s Boehner & Schmidt VOTE NO | September 26, 2007

The US House of Representatives has passed the State Children’s Health Insurance Program 265-159 with 3 out of 5 area Congresspeople voting for it. US Rep’s Hobson, Turner & Chabot , Republican’s all, broke with party leadership and voted for the legislation, while hard liner’s Boehner and Schmidt voted against it.

The Washington Post reports “The compromise package would expand the $5 billion-a-year children’s health insurance program by an average of $7 billion a year over the next five years, for total funding of $60 billion over the period. That would be enough to boost the program’s enrollment to 10 million, up from 6.6 million, and dramatically reduce the ranks of America’s 9 million uninsured children, supporters said.”

According to the AFL-CIO, in Ohio, 5.7% of children are uninsured, resulting in 1, 500,000 kids without health care alternatives. Mr Boehner and Ms Scehmidt, both ardent supporters of the Bush administrations failed policies in Iraq, apparently think it is more important to continue spending Billions to intervene in a civil war we started in Iraq [where tens of thousands of children have been both wounded and killed] rather than attending to the needs of people right here in SW Ohio. Kudo’s to Hobson, Turner and Chabot for their vote, a big fat raspberry to Boehner and Schmidt!!

It looks like the Senate will pass their version of the S-CHIP bill later this week with a veto proof majority. Unfortunately the House is 35 votes short of doing the same thing.
